SEABOLD CELLARS 2019 MOURVEDRE 26 AUG 2022
Continuing
to work our way through the case of Seabold
Cellars wine
that arrived earlier this month, the second one is the 2019
Mourvèdre (Rodnick Farms) (Fig 01,02). Mourvèdre is a new grape on the palate, and
the first time I am sampling it as a single varietal. The previous Mourvèdre encounters were always
blended into a Châteauneuf
du Pape or other EU wines. For more details on Mourvèdre,
go to Wine Folly – Mourvèdre for a short read. The Seabold 2019 Mourvèdre strikes the nose
with bramble, herbaceous pepper notes, and some earthy tones. On the palate, berry fruit bursts forth, followed
by black pepper and a hint of smoked meat, all balance with well-structured
tannins and some bright acid (Fig 03). The
terroir and vinification of this wine are fascinating and best described by the
Seabold Cellars on their website in italics.
“Fresh and light, with a very appealing red berry fruit
character, when first opened, the wine becomes more and more serious with
aeration. The palates begin to display a
telltale savory and smoked meat character, and the structure shows this one is
built for the long haul. Established in
the 1970s as the personal home and vineyard of the legendary Chalone pioneer
Dick Graff. Sitting on the western
slopes of the Gabilan Mountains, the elevations range from 1600’-1900’,
creating a complex topography and extreme diurnal shift. Hand-harvested at night. Upon entering the winery, the grapes were
hand-sorted - retaining 100% whole clusters - and placed in a 2-ton lagar (stone trough). Bunches were foot-stomped to encourage native
yeast fermentation, then pumped over twice daily. Post-fermentation, the wine was transferred
to neutral puncheons for aging. After 18
months, the wine was racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered. 6 barrels were produced.”
Overall, a fine wine that needs to be ordered
and kept in inventory.
