EXPEDITION TO RALEIGH, NC VIA AMTRAK 07 AUG 2022

 While Long Island remains the perfect place to live, work, and play, we still need to venture off LI to see Jack the Grandson, Bridget (Daughter), and son-in-law Stud Muffin (Anthony).  To try something different, we explored a more traditional method of traveling by train.  The travel time to Raleigh is about the same as the drive time, around 10 hours.  We opted to take a car into the city to avoid schlepping all the luggage on the LIRR.  Our jump-off point is the new Moynihan station in the old Farley Post Office building above Penn Station.  It is a beautifully done, bright, open, grand train hall and a large lounge overlooking the great hall.  The train departed on time and arrived within 5 minutes of its scheduled time; however, the return trip ran about 2 ½ hours late.  We booked ourselves into a comfortable sleeper compartment that included meals and a private bath.  A note on the cost, it was about 45% higher than Delta First class to Raleigh and 8 hours longer.  The views were impressive as we whisked across the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River, to name just a few.  We were on train 92, the Silver Star from Penn Station, NY, with stops in Newark NJ, Trenton NJ, Philadelphia PA, Wilmington DE, Baltimore MD, Washington DC, Alexandria VA, Richmond VA, Petersburg VA, Rocky Mount NC, and finally Raleigh NC.  Overall, a relaxing trip if you have time to spare and far better than driving.

  Another day, another fine wine.  Today’s wine came from a friend who has a friend Chris Miller the winemaker at Seabold Cellars .   Chris is also currently involved at Adroit , a winery exploring California’s underutilized wine-growing regions.   The wine for today is an Adroit Wines 2021 Trousseau Stiletto Estate (Fig 01).   Today’s tasting is the first time encountering the Trousseau Grape , an ancient grape from eastern France.  Trousseau is primarily blended in other wines and ports, but here in California the is experimental work being done to use the grape for table wine.  The Trousseau leads with rich dark cherry and rich fruit but with just enough tannins to provide a clean, dry finish.  The Trousseau proved to be the most enjoyable, easy-drinking wine, leaving me looking to acquire many more bottles.  #california #seaboldcellars #adroit #stilettoestate FIG 01 - ADROIT 2021 TROUSSEAU SILETTO ESTATE 17 SEPT 2022

ROANOKE VINEYARDS 2019 GABBY’s CABERNET FRANC 18 SEPT 2022

  A few weeks ago, the 2022 futures wines were picked up, which included a three-pack of Roanoke Vineyards Gabby’s Cabernet Franc 2020.  Given that the three-pack is a 2020 vintage, one might wonder why the bottle we opened is a 2019 Gabby (Fig 01), the exact reason remains a bit of a mystery, but one can assume it was a simple mix-up (Fig 02).  The mix-up, notwithstanding the 2019 Gabby, is a fine wine that presented a bright red color with a bramble nose.  The palate is smooth fruit forward, predominantly dark cherry, bright acid, and smooth tannins.  The Gabby is a fine example of a Long Island Cabernet Franc and should be a good indicator of the 2020 Gabby soon to be opened.  #longislandwineries #vineyardviews #wineryvibes #liwine #licharacter #longislandwine #northforkwineries #longislandwinery #longislandnorthfork #northforker #discoverlongisland #topwineries #northforkwinetrail #liwinecountry #liwine #lisustainablewinegrowers #nywinegrapefdn #nofo...

2018 TOPAZ IMPÉRIAL BRUT ROSÉ 20 SEPT 2022

  The Sparkling Pointe – 2018 Topaz Impérial Brut Rosé is an excellent enjoyable apéritif that also pairs well with dinner.   We savor this sparkling wine as an apéritif before dinner while preparing and plating the meal.   In the glass, the wine presents a matte coral-pink color accentuated by a robust effervescent stream (Fig 01).   The nose is enticed with the delicate aromas of Strawberry and warm Bing cherry.   The palate is greeted with Hibiscus, peach, a zesty lemon acidity, and notes of warm toast.   Next, the taste reflects the blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier, then resting two years on the sur lie before disgorgement.   Then, finally, the tiny bubbles burst forth, preparing the palate for the forthcoming meal.   The Sparkling Pointe 2018 Topaz Impérial Brut Rosé is a fine meal-opening wine and, better still, is available in magnum to ensure a continuous pour through the dinner.       #longis...
