The Lenz
winery winter
pick-up is a fantastic pick-up event. A
tasting of four wines paired with a small plate’s meal created an outstanding
experience. Today’s tasting consisted of
two reds, a sparkling rose, and a white.
Starting with the 2021 Firefly Pétillant Naturel, Sparkling Rosé, the Pet Nat is built from Lenz’s delicate red fruit and
wild yeast. Bright pink, crisp Acid,
fine bubbles with a touch of creaminess, and beautiful floral notes are the
hallmark of this wine (Figure 1). Next
up is the 2015 Gold Chardonnay.
The Chardonnay presents a bright shimmering gold color with slender legs
in the glass. The mouthfeel is creamy
with well-balanced Acid and well-defined notes of green apple (Figure 2). First, transitioning to the reds is the 2016 Merlot, a fine daily wine (Figure 3). Dark color, medium legs, bursting with red
cherry and plum. The tannins are well
represented, and the Acid is balanced. Overall,
very good as a daily wine, but Lenz’s Old Vines Merlot is preferred as a weekly
wine. Lastly, Lenz presented the 2019 Estate Selection Cabernet Franc (Not pictured). The nose experiences black cherry and bramble
with a hint of Lavender. The body is
medium and fruit-forward, with well-structured tannins, balanced Acid, and a
lingering finish with a hit of bitter Cocoa.
All of the
wines paired remarkably well with the small plates presented. The small plates are the craftmanship of Chef Adam Kaufer of Grace & Grit. The Lobster Bisque
(Figure 4) is rich, creamy, and aromatic. The flavor is rich in shellfish, cream, and a
hint of sherry. Well worth a revisit. Both the Duck and the Deviled eggs were plated
together and are a fantastic combination and paired perfectly with the red
wines served (Figure 5). The Duck Breast
is seared perfectly and served cold on a bed of Arugula drizzled with a
fascinating Cabernet Soy drizzle. Lastly
was the Deviled Eggs with Pastrami smoked Salmon, a wonderful expression of
Salmon and eggs. Overall, this is one of
the best Pick-up tasting events in a long time and looking forward to many
more. While we did not follow up on the
wines offered, we did pick up a split case of the 2015 Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon and 2015 Old Vines Merlot, both of which are fantastic (Figure
6).
