Wolffer Grand Prix Club June 2021
Our Wölffer Estate June selection has arrived, a beautiful selection of 8
bottles of 4 different wines from one of the few south fork wineries. The wines will be tasted and enjoyed soon,
but for now, here is a list of what arrived, including a sneak peek at them. Summer in a bottle Rośe 2020, Grandioso Rośe 2020, Own
rooted Merlot Rośe, and Summer
in a bottle white 2020. First, a note on tasting this wine, as Jo and I are
both not fans of Chardonnay's flavor profile, especially if it has touched Oak;
some of these blends may not be our personal favorites. However, in no way
should this be a reflection on the wine but rather our taste preferences.
Summer in a bottle Rośe 2020 is a fusion of reds and whites blended from Merlot(48.5%),
Chardonnay(17%), Cabernet Sauvignon(13%), Cabernet Franc(13%), Gewürztraminer(3%), Sauvignon Blanc(3%), Pinot
Meunier(2%), and a dash of Pinot Blanc(0.5%).
The chardonnay component in this blend is light, and there is no mention
of Oak. We expect this to match our flavor profile
well, the tasting will tell, but I have high expectations for this wine as we
have enjoyed it in the past.
Grandioso Rośe 2020 is a less complex blend consisting of Merlot (66%), Chardonnay(30%),
Cabernet Sauvignon(3%) and Sauvignon Blanc(1%).
Given the higher amount of Chardonnay and fermentation in neutral oak
barrels, this may be an excellent wine but not one of our preferred.
Own rooted
Merlot Rośe is a 100% merlot-based Rośe, and with the complete absence of Chardonnay,
I expect this one to show well and match our personal preferences.
Summer in a bottle white 2020 is an interesting blend of
Chardonnay(27%), Pinot Blanc(21%), Riesling(20%), Gewürztraminer(19%),and Sauvignon Blanc(13%). We have had prior vintages before and have
found it very enjoyable, and the classic Chardonnay notes did not show
through. We are looking forward to
exploring this vintage all summer long.
Overall a
fine selection for the summer backyard outdoor partying, and dining season. We
fully expect to revisit several of these wines all summer long.
