Memorial Day 2021
Memorial Day is a day to relax with Family, friends and to reflect on the sacrifices that so many before us made to give us this day. The day here started a bit cloudy, but it did not stop the Jones Beach air show. As we live near the beach, we enjoyed the flyovers of all the aircraft as they darted back and forth over the beach, putting on the show. As this is a day for Family, food, and wine, our son and his girlfriend joined us. The menu this day was a selection of prime steaks grilled on a ragingly hot searing station and accompanied by all the fixings, including homemade caramelized onions. Now no day would be complete without some wine, and today was no exception. We enjoyed five different wines from both the east and west coast of the US.
We opened
with the 2019 Caymus Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, one of Jo’s favorite
red wines. It opens with strong notes of
Vanilla on the nose, and the taste is rich with very well-structured tannins,
balanced acid, and a long fruit finish.
Next up is
the Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars FAY 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon again
from Stag’s Leap District Napa Valley. Fay
is one of my favorites (OK, their “cask 23” is better). The nose is replete with ripe berries, plums,
and strawberry jam. The mouthfeel is
rich, with well-structured tannins, balanced acid, and beautiful long cherry
finish cherry.
The Torial is a 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon from
Napa with a nose of berries and chocolate. The mouthfeel is smooth with flavors of
raspberry, Vanilla, and coffee. A bit stiffer tannins than the Caymus but still
a fantastic wine.
We then
jumped to Long Island and cracked open a bottle of Diliberto 2015 Merlot. The wine had rested
well and reached its prime with lush fruit-forward taste, rich tannins, and a
long finish.
Lastly, we
returned to California for a fine bottle of Scarecrow Mt.
Etain 2018 by winemaker Celia Welch. The
wine is a blend with about 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Malbec, 4% merlot, and 3%
Petit Verdot. Good fruit on the nose of blueberries, Vanilla, and spice. The
palette is berry flavors and some spice.
Mt. Etain is an excellent rounded wine but will continue to develop over
the years. So, between the airshow, food,
Family, and wine, a good time was had by all this Memorial day.
