Bayview Tavern Seaford NY

The Bayview Tavern, @bayviewtavernseaford is a classic local tavern food and drinks place across from some of Seaford's canals.  Below is a picture of the inside, and the sign at the back of the room reflects the Caps restaurant they used to own that was dockside before superstorm Sandy.  I have visited Bayview Tavern several times, and the home-style comfort food is consistently delicious.  The crew is fun and personable while being remarkably efficient.  Of course, all COVID-19 precautions are fully observed in keeping with the times; even the bar crowd, a stout, hardy, and gregarious bunch, observe the rules.  The drinks are well made and very generous pours. For the food, the menus are a great collection of tavern food and several specials each day, all of which are moderately priced.  I go for the specials as it tends to show off the kitchen's real talent or shortcomings.

On our last visit, I opened with the flash-fried Calamari, which came with a Thai chili sauce and Marinara sauce spiced with cherry peppers. The Calamari arrived hot, crisp, and moist without a single rubber band in any of the pieces.  The complimenting sauces were good, with the Marinara having just enough to heat to pair well with the Calamari without you needing a fire extinguisher to cool off your mouth.  The special for the day was a Shepherd's pie, which was, in fact, a cottage pie that used beef instead of lamb.  The pie had a fluffy, flavorful cap of mashed potatoes that was crisp on the peaks. The mashed potatoes were just enough to cover the filling but not bury it.  The filling was a generous portion of ground beef seasoned quite well with rich beef gravy.  The filling also contained just the right amount of green peas that were cooked perfectly, not overcooked into mush.  I do like mushy peas (a big UK pub thing), just not in my pie. Jo had the fried chicken platter, which came with tater tots.  Both were fried to a beautiful golden brown.  The breading on the chicken was crisp, and the chicken inside remained juicy and tender.  There was plenty left over for taking home.  We have visited several times before and will be back again.  The Barstool sports fund has helped them out to get through the pandemic, but please tip generously to keep this local jewel alive and well.
