Bayview Tavern Seaford NY

Image
The Bayview Tavern , @bayviewtavernseaford is a classic local tavern food and drinks place across from some of Seaford's canals.   Below is a picture of the inside, and the sign at the back of the room reflects the Caps restaurant they used to own that was dockside before superstorm Sandy.   I have visited Bayview Tavern several times, and the home-style comfort food is consistently delicious.   The crew is fun and personable while being remarkably efficient.   Of course, all COVID-19 precautions are fully observed in keeping with the times; even the bar crowd, a stout, hardy, and gregarious bunch, observe the rules.   The drinks are well made and very generous pours. For the food, the menus are a great collection of tavern food and several specials each day, all of which are moderately priced.   I go for the specials as it tends to show off the kitchen's real talent or shortcomings. On our last visit, I opened with the flash-fried Calamari, which came with a Thai chili s

Kontokosta Winery Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Select 2018

Image
A few weeks ago, we did a pickup run from two of the winery clubs we are currently in and brought home eleven different wines (15 bottles total).  Now we are drinking our way through each one.  Second, up is the Kontokosta Winery Sauvignon Blanc Barrel Select 2018. We chilled the wine to about 58 degrees and paired it with dinner, consisting of grilled Salmon and scallops in a light cream sauce.  The wine was allowed to breathe a bit before tasting with about five ounces in our universal stemmed glasses.  The color is pale gold with skinny legs in the glass.  The nose was light primarily with caramel and vanilla notes in part from the new French oak aging.  On the palate, the wine is dry with medium acid but far less intense than the Lenz Sauvignon Blanc .  The wine had a full mouthfeel, and the alcohol was medium, with medium flavor intensity.  The flavor was buttered pecans reflecting the Malo-lactic fermentation.  All of this combined, it was much closer to a Sancerre from France

Harleys American Grille 20 FEB 2021

Image
First, the disclaimer, I enjoyed the food and company last Saturday so much I forgot to take pictures, so I am borrowing one from the restaurant’s website.  On my next visit, I promise to post more pictures. This was my first visit to Harleys American Grille but far from my last visit here.  We arrived for a 6:00 PM seating (a group of four), and the place was busy but light in keeping with all the COVID-19 rules.  The greeting was warm and the team friendly and properly masked as well as the dining room has all the requisite partitions between properly space tables. The menu was a classic American grill with all the favorites well represented.  I opened with the Spicy (not too hot) tuna nachos with crisp wonton chips and a generous helping of good tuna well complimented with guacamole, soy ginger finished with a creamy jalapeno drizzle. My entree choice was the USDA prime 21-day dry-aged bone-in 20 oz Kansas strip as this is an American grille.   I ordered it black and blue, and

To all my colleagues, family, and friends, as I continue to enjoy retirement 4.0, I rationalized my social media accounts and have created two personas.     The first is for business, technology, and the like under my full name(three days a week), and the second under the masthead of Liwinedad for all the fun stuff such as LI wine, food, family, and friends (four days a week). So here is where you can follow me and what I will be discussing on each of the following channels. Andrew F. Lenz Estate Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2019

Image
Last week we did a pickup run from two of the winery clubs we are currently in and brought home eleven different wines (15 bottles total).  Now ahead lies the task of trying each one.  First up is the Lenz Estate Selection Sauvignon Blanc 2019.  We chilled the wine to about 58 degrees and paired it with dinner, consisting of grilled shrimp with a light creamy shrimp and cheese sauce accompanied by a small side salad and Caesar dressing.  The wine was allowed to breathe a bit before tasting with about 5 oz in a universal stemmed glass.  The color is a light to almost pale gold with minimal legs in the glass.  The nose was medium primarily with herbaceous, green grass, crisp green apple, and a very slight hint of stone fruit.  On the palate, the wine is quite dry with high acid but not as intense as a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.  Both the body and the alcohol were medium, and the flavor intensity medium to light.  The flavor was much more pear, lime with a bit of minerality.  All of t

Wine Pickups at Kontokosta, Lenz, and Sannino

Image
Friday (12 Feb 2021) was a cold bright day perfect to do a quick pick up run to several of the wineries where we are club members.  The trip was an express pickup run with no tasting and only 15 minutes allocated for each stop.  I was the driver, Jo the copilot, and navigator for this run. We headed out at about 9:30, making the first stop at Kontokosta around 11:15 AM.  As this is the offseason outside, the winery was still, except for the wind turbine's gentle whoosh in the background. The tasting room's view was serene across the snow-covered field leading down to the bluff overlooking the sound.  We picked up a 2016 Merlot, 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2018 Sauvignon Blanc Barrel select. As my son is a member also, we picked up his quarterly club selection. From there, it was on to Lenz by 11:34 AM. Lenz has a fine selection of wines, and they allow you to customize your quarterly club selections, which always means that I add to the suggested list to fill out a case.

Beautiful photo art Today's posting is just a short note on this blog's background art theme and the artist behind the lens.  Jackie T. provided this view of the vineyards.  She grew up across the street from me, and her parents are our close friends and winetasting partners 😊.  Jackie is creating a photography practice that focuses on capturing the beauty of this world in both still life and portraits.  If you want to see more of her work, click on over to Jaclyn Christine Photography , at Instagram@Jac_Lens_photos , or Mail

WELCOME TO LONG ISLAND WINE DAD

Image
Jo & Andy at Raphael's Vineyard Welcome to my blog.   Here you can follow me as I explore mostly Long Island wines and spirits.   Tasting wine is becoming a passion of mine in retirement 4.0 – that means I still work from home about two days a week if I am so inclined. I tend to favor reds, and Jo (my lifelong wife) tend to favor whites.   We will be exploring bourbons, and other spirits offered up by the local distilleries in addition to wine.   Of course, wine paired with food is even better, so you will also find comments on food places we discover while exploring the wine country.   I am an engineer by formal training, so some of the wine comments will be technical and scientific.   So far, we have made it to about a dozen wineries and distillers (becoming members at many), and as far as I know, we have about 70 yet to discover. In the meantime, I am starting my more formal education in wine, having completed the WSET level 1 course, which is both fun and very informative.
