Roanoke Futures tasting Jan 2021
We picked up
two sets of the wine futures this week, and it was well worth it. I usually
think of wine tasting futures as visiting a winery and scurrying about the
barrel room with a wine thief in hand sampling the wines right out of the
barrel. Ah, but alas, in the era of covid, how things have changed. To accommodate futures tastings, Roanoke came
up with a cool solution. The team bottled 4 of their future wines in full
bottles, including labels, and presented them 2 per wood box, in short beautifully
done. Wine tasting alone is OK but much
better shared with friends and family, so we set up a full tasting and invited
the family over the weekend. The wines
were young but fabulous and showcased the future potential id allod to age a
bit longer. They were all good, but my personal favorite was the "Prime
Numbers" as it showed remarkably well, followed by "The Hill,"
"Gabby's Cabernet Franc," and "Striking Distance."
The Prime
Numbers is a blend reminiscent of a left bank Bordeaux, combining Cabernet
Sauvignon Cabernet Franc, and Merlot but absent the Petit Verdot and Malbec. Healthy
body from the Cab Sauv, spice and cherry from the Franc, and a nice balance of
dark fruit from the Merlot. I look
forward to aging this one to perfection in my cellar. If you are a fan of Franc's, then the Gabby's
is the way to go as it is a fine example of a Long Island Franc.
